RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) testing with VO2 Master
RMR – your resting metabolic rate, the amount of energy (kcal) your body uses per day while completely at rest.
What is an RMR test used for?
- Calculating your calorie requirements accurately
- Nutrition planning (weight loss, maintenance or weight gain)
- Managing athletes' energy balance
- Assessing metabolic efficiency
RMR testing helps you understand:
- your estimated calorie expenditure over 24 hours,
- your estimated energy expenditure for nutrition planning,
- how your metabolism compares with reference values (low, normal or high).
How the test is performed
- The athlete or client lies down or sits very still.
- A VO₂ Master mask is fitted.
- The device records:
O₂ consumption and respiratory airflow. - The test takes 10–15 min.
During this time, breathing data stabilises and the device estimates your resting metabolic rate (RMR), using oxygen consumption and an assumed respiratory quotient. It does not directly measure CO₂, RER or the proportion of energy obtained from fat and carbohydrates.
